Thoughts vs me vs actions.
“Every thought has an equal and positive action”. By positive I mean to say that there “is” inevitably an action following a thought and the deed itself may be good, evil or inaction (“is” is the key-word here). Yes, even inaction is a form of action i.e. we are doing something by not doing something.
So every seed of thought sowed in our subconscious results in a deed –we may act positively on it by doing something good or negatively react to it by doing something bad or simply do nothing about it thereby doing the act of inaction. Our personality is a function of our thoughts. There is infinite no. of thoughts submerged in our subconscious, accumulated since the time of our genesis, beginning perhaps in our mother’s wombs and all these thoughts must result in a deed, though many such thoughts may collude to influence one act of ours and many acts may result from one particular belief or thought. For e.g. how we raise our kids is based on the thoughts we have accumulated over the years by experiencing it from the receivers end in our own childhoods and by what we see, hear, read and feel in the surroundings; we have stored all that information in our subconscious and when we turn parents we act according to our beliefs and personal dictums - so our “parent” personality becomes a function of our knowledge, based on ‘how to raise kids data’ stored in our subconscious.
Now the question is – can we control our actions, which is a function of our subconscious thoughts, consciously? Or is every action committed on impulse and instinct, guided by our deeply seated beliefs and thoughts? Can we really over-ride instinct and act according to will? If our bad deeds are considered impulsive then I don’t see how our good deeds are any different? Both good and bad deeds are a result of instinctual action, the instincts being a result of our deeply founded beliefs and thoughts. In doing good or bad we are only reacting to our beliefs and thoughts, so we are actually not responsible for both i.e. how can we, be responsible when we are only reacting?
Some learned men say that it is possible to choose how we act. But if our actions are only reactions to our thoughts then how can we voluntarily choose how to “react”? I guess, they are only trying to say that we can choose how to think and choose what to believe because in choosing what we believe we can control our actions, which are in fact a reaction to our thoughts and beliefs. We are programmed to act according to our thoughts and so it is not really choosing how to act that’s possible, it is only possible to choose what to believe and that dictates our personality and actions. But is that the truth?
How can we control our thoughts and beliefs? Where do our beliefs and thoughts stem from? Do we really know? What we come to believe and think may be heavily influenced by our circumstances. Our senses contribute immensely to how we feel about certain things. So if we feel hurt by something we will record it as a negative action in our subconscious whereas if something affects us positively we think of it as a good action. So are our thoughts and beliefs not a function of what we feel under a given set of circumstances? Do thoughts and beliefs necessarily stem from recorded feelings but then what about those feelings based on circumstances of which we have no real hand experience and are based on assumptions? What actually shapes our thoughts and beliefs?- Circumstances? Our five senses? Or is it a more abstract and ill-defined entity that makes us think, feel and believe whatever we do? If we can control that unknown aspect we would be voluntarily controlling what we believe and thereby how we act. I fail to identify it by a name. Can any of you help me out here?
Till then I would like to believe that our personality is a function of our thoughts and beliefs and there is not a method known to me by which I can voluntarily shape ma beliefs and thoughts, therefore I concede I am useless as far as controlling ma actions is concerned because ma actions are the inevitable positive reaction of ma thoughts and beliefs (which I cannot control!). Am I a victim of ma circumstances?
i don't remind it know...
